This Week at the Brennan’s

Here’s What Happened This Week:

If you read last week’s update, you will know that we had no kids with us this past week because my parents are angels/saints/amazing grandparents who like the opportunity to spoil their grand babies. So Gordon and I got to work in peace the entire week. Eureka!! It was amazing.

No kids meant work and more work for the both of us! As someone on my instagram stories told me on Tuesday “you’re boring without kids” and I might have to agree…at least this past week was pretty boring. I had my head down in my laptop, typing and working away because I am a one woman show and it makes me feel SO GOOD to cross things off my to do list. I really liked being able to test recipes and have a whole uninterrupted afternoon. It’s the little things that make me happy.

Gordon and I took advantage of no kids and went to Rosa Mexicana for a hot date on Monday night and boy oh boy the guacamole was AMAZING. Everything else we got was a little too spicy for my taste, but that *mild* guac was something else. Super buttery with a lot of tomatoes and cilantro. I’m going to be working on a copycat recipe real soon, as soon as all those darn avocados I bought are ripe. Haha!!

One day this week, I was able to take the train out of the city again for a little project I’m working on. You’ll find out what that is in the upcoming month or two. I was completely radio silent on that trip. I definitely had my eyes and ears on social media though, even though I wasn’t home. Any guesses on what I am working on? It involves the whole family 😉

I think on Thursday, I mostly finished my Mommy-ing free downloadable PDF’s!! It’s amazing what you can get done when you just put your head down and work. These PDF’s are mini guides or chapters about random things that all mom’s need to know. As mothers, we need to know a little bit about a lot of things. We oversee everything that happens in the home! So, these 12 free downloads will be hopefully available for you lovely people as soon as I get my darn email subscriptions figured out. (One more thing on my to-do list.)

By Friday, I was really missing all three of our kiddos and the apartment seemed just a little too quiet. I did a photoshoot in the rain (and froze my butt off!) and Gordon picked up a rental car so we could drive north a little to stay at a hotel about half way between NYC home and half way to my parents place where we’d be picking up all three of the kids on Saturday afternoon.

Then on Saturday morning, we drove the rest of the way to get those rascals and love on them hard!! I didn’t put Blake down for a long time!! We truly did miss them and it seemed like they were so much older even though it was only seven days.

This week of having no kids around made me realize that yes, they are a TON of work, but they make my life better, even if it means total exhaustion is the cost.

A bowl of food on a plate

Here’s what’s coming up this week:

Some yummy recipes I tested last week, including that chicken and veggie coconut curry! Yum yum!

March 1st is on Thursday! WHAAT?

I need to pick up some summer clothes because Gordon and I are going to Aruba in a few weeks and apparently summer clothes aren’t sold in the winter. Haha! I own zero pairs of shorts.

And the first few days of the week are looking sunny and gorgeous!! So, we will be out and about.

Have a great week, friends! xo

You didn’t put Blake down? You mean you didn’t put Eddie down?

So great to see you taking time for you and hubby of course. I am not a parent, by choice and love to see wonderful and inspiring women like yourself finding the work and life balance. I love to hear all about your time and especially your cooking adventures as I like to call them. I have many allergies and food sensitivities that I have to do all from scratch. Do you have a tried and true recipe for baking powder? I am sensitive extrememly to any form of corn, that is why I can’t just go to a store and pick some up. I just made biscuits with what I thought would work. They were raw in the middle and hockey puckish. If you could help with a recipe I would lov it so much. Thank you.

I’m glad you got some items crossed off your to-do list. It’s a nice feeling of accomplishment.

I remember when I thought I’d go “crazy” if I didn’t get a break from my three kids (2, 3, and 4 years old at the time). I was living in NYC and luckily my parents only lived 30 mins. from me. They were very active people, so it wasn’t too often they were able to spend a week at a time with their grandchildren. When that did happen, I was elated. But once they were gone, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I was a SAHM with an empty nest. I cooked fancy and romantic dinners for my husband each night. Got to listen to our favorite songs from our record collection.. However, each night I just had to call the kids so I can hear their voices and say goodnight. Seriously, I couldn’t wait for them to come HOME. Not everyone has the luxury of sending their kids off for a week. We are blessed for such an opportunity. xo

Aruba! Awesome. My husband and I are also working on planning an adult vacation, something we haven’t done EVER. How exciting! Check out Express, Boston Proper, and Venus for cute summer stuff and swimsuits.

Don’t you love it when you find a place with amazing guac, its the best. Glad you got a lot crossed off your to list, I love it when that happens. I went to Old navy last week and they already have shorts, tanks and bathing suits out and I was like WHY it’s only March. Then I read your post and now I completely understand. People take vacations! 🙂

I so enjoyed your update, you really accomplished so many things. I remember the children visiting the grandparents for several days. Maybe the first couple of days I really enjoyed, but than missed them so much, couldn’t wait to have them home again.

That’s exactly how it was for us! The first few days was so fun, but after that we were bored and missing them!

I just ordered some summer clothes from Target, Kohl’s and Lee Women’s Clothing….all free shipping and free returns!! Sizes seem so unpredictable that I usually order two sizes, keep the size that works and am able to return the other at no cost. I’ve been happy with my shorts, swimsuits and summer dresses. Love your posts!

I’m a mom of 3 as well and I definitely look forward to alone time. Usually the next day I am a little too lonely without my kids running around like crazy. It’s always a blessing to have a great support system.

No clue on the little project is it blog related or maybe finding a new place to live?? Or scouting a cool summer vacation spot?? My NYC friend always vacations in a rental on Long Island her hubby comes in for weekends and long weekends. Gets the kids out of city. They like it and I always tell her it sounds so cool and fancy to say your going the the island for the summer 🙂

Hey Lauren, just curious what kind of car you rented that allowed all 3 of your kids to fit in the backseat? Is Brooke still in a booster seat? Thanks!

Brooke is not in a booster seat anymore. It was snug!! We rented a VW passat.
